Invitation: The Politics of Palm Oil Expansion and Tropical Deforestation in Indonesia

November 28, 2013

Welcome to open event on:
The Politics of Palm Oil Expansion and Tropical Deforestation in Indonesia

in series Helsinki University Social Forum Dialogues

When: 2.15 pm to 4pm, Friday 29th of November
Where: Unioninkatu 37 (Faculty of Social Sciencies): seminar room 4, 2nd floor
Event is open to all. Language: English.

In Indonesia development programs aiming for rapid economic growth are being implemented all over the country. The establishment of new palm oil plantations is one of the consequences, seemingly explaining why rampant deforestation has continued – despite over a decade of concerted efforts by civil society and other actors to slow down tropical deforestation in e.g. West Kalimantan.

In the session questions to be addressed are:
Why is deforestation continuing? Who benefits? How have decentralization policies affected the dynamics and what is the relation between national and regional developments? What is the role of Indonesian civil society within this context?
